The KJ7 Education Foundation’s Discovery Grant Program enables Students (individually or in groups) to plan and pursue independent learning projects of their own design.  The program strives to promote academic curiosity, exploration, problem-solving and motivation for learning.  This opportunity is open to district students of all ages, who may apply for grants of up to $100 (and beyond under special circumstances).  Students are expected to work on their own time to the extent possible, and to recruit a teacher or advisor as a project advisor who will assist them in developing their proposal and serve as a mentor for the project.

Granting Cycle:

Discovery Student Grants may be submitted any time during the school year and we encourage applications for projects that will take place over summer break as well.

Do you have a special area of interest, or a possible career path that you would like to learn more about? You can explore it beyond the classroom by proposing a self-directed project and applying for a grant (average size is $100, but you can request less and/or more)!

  • You are eligible to apply if you are enrolled for the current academic year in elementary, middle or high school in Kendrick Joint School District #283.
  • Select a topic of interest you want to explore, and think of a project that will build related knowledge or skills.
  • Choose a teacher or advisor who knows about your subject area, talk with him/her about the project, and ask him/her to be your Project Advisor.
  • Apply individually or as a group, using the official application form.
  • Your application must be signed by your Project Advisor and the School Principal.
  • Grants of up to $100 (and beyond under special circumstances) are awarded.
  • The project must be completed by the date specified, and a Project Report must be submitted to the Foundation describing the results and what you learned.
  • Grants will not be awarded to fund the purchase or maintenance of livestock or pets.
  • You should have sufficient knowledge of the proposal topic to ensure that the project will be achievable and will accomplish the stated goals.
  • Discuss the proposal and assist student(s) in completing the grant application form.
  • Sign the application form, agreeing to serve as the Teacher Advisor for the project.
  • Assist student(s) periodically throughout the project to monitor progress.
  • Provide useful feedback, offer motivation and encouragement, demonstrate belief in the student’s abilities, and help them to achieve their goals.
  • Review the students’ Final Report prior to submission.

Please Note:

  • Serving as a Project Advisor is a volunteer opportunity, there is no stipend or reimbursement.
  • If you have any questions, please email  anwitt04@gmail.com.
  • Each student or group applicant proposes a self-study project that will allow them to develop skills and knowledge about a topic of their own choice.
  • It is the Foundation’s assumption that you have helped your student understand the guidelines and you have approved the topic and Project Advisor.
  • You are required to sign the application form stating you agree to keep receipts for the project if you help your student make purchases. Receipts will be turned in along with your students’ final report.
